What Is Coinbase Offering UK Investors?
Coinbase has begun rolling out access to nearly 4,000 U.S. stocks for eligible customers in the United Kingdom, adding traditional equities to an app previously centered on cryptocurrencies and stablecoins. Starting Aug. 6, eligible users will progressively gain access to buy, sell and manage U.S. shares alongside their crypto and fiat holdings. The service includes 24-hour trading from Monday through Friday, zero-commission transactions and fractional investing from £1. Customers can fund stock purchases instantly with either British pounds or USDC. That setup reduces the need to move money between separate brokerage, banking and cryptocurrency accounts before placing a trade. The company said it is the first crypto-native trading app to provide direct access to U.S. equities in the UK. The launch extends Coinbase beyond digital assets as it works toward an “Everything Exchange” combining stocks, stablecoins, savings, borrowing and crypto trading within one platform. Keith Grose, Coinbase’s regional managing director for the UK and Europe, said the company had made progress toward creating a single place where customers could access several financial products. Coinbase plans to release additional products in the UK and European Union over the coming months. How Will The Stock Trading Service Work?
The shares will be held in the United States by Apex Clearing. Customer orders will be routed to Apex for execution through Coinbase Capital Markets Corporation, giving users exposure to conventional U.S.-listed securities rather than blockchain-based representations of those assets. The product provides access to major U.S. technology and artificial intelligence stocks, an area that has attracted strong retail interest. The extended 24/5 schedule also gives UK investors more time to respond to U.S. earnings releases, economic data and company announcements outside regular New York trading hours. Fractional shares may make expensive stocks more accessible because customers can invest a fixed pound amount rather than buying a full share. Zero-commission trading may also appeal to smaller investors, although users will still need to consider foreign-exchange costs, spreads, tax treatment and the risks of trading during periods with thinner liquidity. Coinbase is betting that convenience can help it compete with established UK investment apps. Keeping equities, cryptocurrencies and cash balances in one account could reduce friction for customers who already use Coinbase but rely on another provider for stock trading.Investor Takeaway
Coinbase is no longer competing only with crypto exchanges. By adding U.S. stocks, savings and borrowing, it is moving closer to digital brokers and financial super-apps, where customer retention may depend on offering several products through one account.
